Habitat

Fairly common in all types of wooded terrain and woodland, it is also present in some parks and gardens as well as in more open terrain with scattered large trees.

Description

A medium-sized woodpecker with a black and white colouration, the large white spots on the sides and the intense red on the anal area stand out at first sight. Black wings barred with white best seen while in flight in a very undulating manner. It has a powerful beak that it uses to drill into wood. The sexes in adult individuals are differentiated by a red spot on the nape of the male, black on the female, and while adults have a black crown, in juveniles it is completely red in both sexes.
