EUROPEAN HONEY-BUZZARD

Pernis apivorus

Length

52-59 cm

Wingspan

113-135 cm

Classification

Order: Accipitriformes
Family: Accipitridae

Pernis apivorus

Habitat

Common in migration, especially postnuptial, and can be seen almost anywhere in La Rioja. It breeds in forests with clearings, small wetlands and cultivated fields.

Description

Medium-sized raptor with wide wings, long neck, small head and long, rounded tail. Yellow eyes. Larger than a Buzzard, but easy to confuse from the distance. Its plumage is very varied, but the barred pattern of its tail and the darker carpal areas of its wings stand out. As its name indicates, it feeds mainly on bees and wasps, which is why it has feathers around its eyes and a "scale-like" beak to protect itself from stings.
