Habitat

Frequent in valleys with scattered trees, groves, fruit trees and copses. Breeds in deciduous and mixed forests, on mature farmland with grasses and trees, in suburban areas, and also in large gardens.

Description

Fairly large woodpecker, very undulating flight. Green upper area and lighter underparts, the rump is yellow. The males have a red moustache while in the females it is black. Crown and nape red in both sexes. Unlike other woodpeckers, it spends a lot of time on the ground as it feeds mainly on ants. It is easily frightened often detected by its claim.
