Habitat

Inhabitant of well-preserved riparian forests, deciduous forests or large parks, it prefers areas associated with river environments. The diet consists mainly of larvae and adults of wood-boring beetles.

Description

The smallest woodpecker in Europe, with the typical colour pattern (black and white) but the size of a sparrow. Its back is barred black and white, the crown is red in males and black in females, and the ventral area is paler in colour with a slight black stripe on the sides. Difficult to observe when feeding high in the trees due to its small size.
