Habitat

Generally fairly common in wetlands, from mudflats and intertidal flats to small ponds, ditches, and wet fields. Breeds in colonies, or sometimes alone, in tall tree-covered terrain near lakes and shallow sea bays. It is mainly observed alone or in small groups, perched on the edge of the water.

Description

Very large heron, robustly built. Straight and strong beak, greyish yellow (orange when breeding). Grey or grey yellow legs. Plumage mostly grey above, greyish-white below, with paler neck. Adult has white forehead, centre of crown and sides of head, nape and sides of crown are black. Like other herons and egrets, they fly with their necks tucked up.
